]]>The game developer revealed that the first Major, the Winter Tour which is already underway with regional play in China, will end in Lima, Peru, and the Spring Tour will end with the Berlin Major. The grand event for the Summer Tour will be the Bali Major, which will take place in Indonesia.
Valve disclosed this in a public statement made on Steam.
“Cheer on your favorite teams around the world as they fight to score crucial DPC points and coveted spots at three Major tournaments that await on the road to The International,” the Dota 2 game developer said.
“Teams that excel in the Winter Tour will advance to the Lima Major, hosted by 4D Esports. The Spring Tour will provide further opportunity with the Berlin Major, hosted by ESL, and the Summer Tour will wrap play with the Bali Major, hosted by IO Esports.”
Aside from the locations, it was also announced that the Majors will be hosted by third-party tournament organizers. It revealed that ESL Gaming will be in charge of the Berlin Major, while 4D Esports will be tasked to organize the Lima Winter Tour and IO Esports for the Bali Major.
This will be the first time a Major is held in Peru and Indonesia, but the fourth time Germany will host a Major. Although the location of the Peru Major was officially announced to be hosted in Lima, it was previously leaked online after a promotional poster for the event circulated at the end of the year. Fans in the region are excited about the opportunity to see their favorite teams and players in person.
The previous Majors have been hosted in several European countries such as the United Kingdom, which hosted the 2018 Major, France played host to the 2019 Major, and more recently, Ukraine hosted the 2021 Major.
In the previous year, there were two Dota 2 Major tournaments held, one organized by ESL in Stockholm, Sweden, and another by PGL in Arlington, Texas. Both of these events saw strong viewership numbers and were considered successful.
The PGL Arlington Major 2022 was the second-most viewed non-T1 event in Dota 2’s history, with a peak viewership of 707,900. It was preceded by the 2021 Majors hosted by WePlay and ONE Esports, while ESL One Stockholm placed fifth on this metric.
Information about The International 12, the final event of the Dota 2 season, has not yet been announced. The previous year’s The International was held in Singapore and had a peak audience of around 1.7 million viewers. Tundra Esports, a British esports organization, emerged as the winner and received the majority of the $18.9 million (~15.8 million) prize pool.
The announcement of the 2023 Dota 2 Major locations has been met with excitement from the esports community. These tournaments will be must-see events for Dota 2 fans and provide a platform for the best teams in the world to showcase their skills and compete for the title of Major champion.
